In recognition of the specialist nature of the assessment and remediation of contaminated sites, the Contaminated Sites Act 2003 provides for auditors to undertake an independent review of site assessments and/or remediation work carried out by other professionals.

These reviews are mandatory in prescribed circumstances. The Contaminated Sites Act 2003 and Contaminated Sites Regulations 2006 set out the requirements for the accreditation of auditors, the duties of auditors and the circumstances in which auditors must be engaged.
