Serious incident response

The Department of Environment Regulation (DER) has a dedicated Pollution Response team based in Perth that is ready at all times to respond to serious pollution incidents and hazardous materials emergencies state-wide at short notice. DER is part of Western Australia’s hazardous materials emergency response framework and works closely with the Department of Fire and Emergency Services to resolve serious incidents quickly.

Pollution response officers

Pollution response officers are appointed under
s 88 of the Environmental Protection Act 1986 (EP Act) and are trained in enforcement, pollution monitoring, hazardous material and emergency management.
DER pollution response officers travel in emergency response vehicles that are equipped with state of the art equipment specifically designed for pollution monitoring and sampling.

The Pollution Response team works closely with local governments, other government agencies and emergency services to prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from major pollution incidents.  Pollution Response officers conduct inspections of hazardous materials facilities to identify risks and take measures to prevent major pollution incidents. Officers also collect evidence of environmental offences and can take on-the-spot action under the Environmental Protection Act to protect the environment.

State emergency plans

State Emergency Plans (WestPlans) are developed for designated hazards, and are approved by the State Emergency Management Committee (SEMC). WestPlans provide operational detail on the roles and responsibilities of agencies including DER. One of these plans is the WestPlan HAZMAT. This plan details the emergency management arrangements for hazardous materials emergencies throughout Western Australia.
